Co-Founder & President Dr. Maki Fukami is the only organization management scientist who has studied Emergency Management in Japan. She has undertaken extensive fieldwork in the Japanese Fire Service and Coast Guard for more than 10 years and is currently the Japan representative of the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM). Dr. Fukami has also published many articles. Her most recent article, “Emergency Management as an Applied Management Science”, was published in Organizational Science, a Japanese peer-reviewed Journal in June 2012. It points out the problems that arise when Japanese organizational structures attempts to address disaster management. Her research interests focus on organization development and organization design in Public Management and Emergency Management. Dr. Fukami graduated from the Faculty of Economics, Kyoto University and received her Ph.D. in Economics from Kyoto University in 2008. She was selected as a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Research Fellow 2005 through 2007 and 2009 through 2011. She was also a Visiting Scholar of the Japan Coast Guard Academy in 2005 (Research and Development of Simulation Training), of UCLA in 2006 (Research about Incident Command System), and of George Washington University in 2010 (Research about American Emergency Management). She established the International Institute of Global Resilience (IIGR) to promote the professionalization of Emergency Management internationally and globally in 2012. IIGR has done many innovative projects with partners both in the US and Japan and received the Chairman’s Award from IAEM for exceptional efforts to establish a strong partnership between Japanese emergency managers and their colleagues globally in 2013. |
